the b-sides

oh, hi there!
This post, kind of like my photography, has been in a weird state of limbo for quite some time now. The first written draft of this post was created months ago, and these photos were uploaded long before that. I had so many themes to talk about: storytelling, curating, my weird enthusiasm for triptychs... but now I just mostly want to talk about where I am in life. I still like the post title though, so hold onto that thought!
Let's just do a real quick recap of today so that in the future, I can maybe get a better sense of where past-me is coming from. I took the NCLEX today, and what a harrowing experience that was.
In the whirlwind of emotions that entailed after those fateful 75 questions, I found myself in the local Macy's trying on suits for an interview when it dawned on me:
I'm about to start my career
...
woah.

After being a full-time college student for almost a decade, it's sometimes hard to imagine life with a dream job, free time, and a living wage. But there I was, trapped in a Calvin Klein jacket that was too tight around the shoulders when this revelation came to light. This dream of mine is right around the corner! A couple of months from now, I could be typing into this blog after walking home from a long shift. Sitting a fully decorated apartment, light jazz in the background, maybe there's even a bit of snow falling outside so I'll have an excuse to drink hot cocoa. Ah, a man can dream, can't he?
But until then, I've finally (hopefully) hopped over the last hurdle of becoming a registered nurse! All that's left is to find me that job. As I meander about with my applications and interviews, I guess I'm at a bit of an awkward phase where I'm no longer a student and I'm just an unemployed adult.
I think that's why I really like and kept the original name of this blog post: the b-sides
I'm documenting a part of my life that isn't necessarily glamorous or fun, but is still important to the overall process of personal growth.

As for how this title is related to these photos... well, these are the ones that "didn't make the cut". The b-sides of my past posts.
During my fourth blog post, I realized that my photos are most enjoyable when they are shown in an order that helps drive a story or common theme. By creating narrative through arrangement, a set of photos can be interesting even when the individual is not. Many of the photos aren't outstanding, but they provide necessary context for the ones surrounding them.
However, this process comes with a price. To create a strong narrative you have to trim the fat in a post. Even if a photo is amazing, if it isn't necessary, you toss it out.
In this blog post, each of these photos are the "rejects" of my previous posts. I thought I'd add them as a little bonus for myself because I just couldn't bear the thought of some of my favorite shots never seeing the day of light. Even though there's not real story behind the order of these photos, I've tried to arrange them in such a way that feels intuitive.
I hope you enjoy them! I'll definitely try to take, develop, and share more photos while I'm in California!
Until next time!
